Famine

The third seal has been released! Out rides Famine, pulled by his starving black horse! This is one of the models I designed for my final thesis project about the Four Horsemen.

When the Lamb broke open the third seal, I heard the third living creature cry out, “Come forward!” This time I saw a black horse, the rider of which held a pair of scales in his hand. I heard what seemed to be a voice coming from in among the four living creatures. It said: “A day’s pay for a ration of wheat and the same for three of barley! But spare the oil and the wine!” (Rev. 6:5-6)

I wanted this rider to not only be an embodiment of famine, but also of greed and gluttony. He is the ever hungry all consumer! Blinded by his greed and hunger (with mouths for eyes), he cares not for the suffering of those starving around him. I decided to separate the horse and rider for a more "chariot-throne" setup to help show the contrast between the poor, starved state of the horse and the opulent, gluttonous status of the rider. This relationship is reflected by the imbalance of Famine's scales.
